Raheem sterling case study 2
the image used for the cover of Raheem sterling was shot at a low-mid shot, this makes him look important, another reason he looks important is the wings, the wings are black are symbolising that he is protecting people from what he has been through (racism). the head tilt shows confidence, he is presented with masculine energy.
in the main image, Raheem sterling is presented as important for many reasons on the photo, the first one is the camera angle, the photo has been taken from a low camera angle known as a low-mid shot, the second one is the way he is standing, it makes him look very confident and the head tilt also gives off confidence, the final reason is the black wings, this could symbolise that he is protecting people from his experiences.
on the main image the typography is used differently in parts of sections on the magazine cover, the typography is sometimes presented as large and golden which can present wealth, this targets their audience because most of their audience has some wealth, and the font made it stand out, while some parts of the typography is smaller and on the side.

CASE STUDY 2: VOGUE
Vogue is a monthly women's magazine, it is meant to challenge, inspire, and empower women.
Vogue had a history of not including black women on their covers until 2014.
in the past, vogue did include different ethnicities on their covers, for example until 2014 their was no black models on their covers
Malala Yousafzai:
Malala is a Pakistani education activist,
She was shot in the head at the age of 15 and miraculously survived,
She won the Nobel Peace prize in 2014, the youngest ever in history
won numerous prizes for her activism
met world leaders like Obama
She was born on July 12th 1997
the Taliban shot her in the head because she stood up for women's rights to education .
Malala was featured on the front cover of Vogue in 2021 and the reason Vogue decided to use Malala on the front cover in 2021 and not sooner before because of her near death experience of getting shot in the head by the Taliban is because Vogue waited until the conflict with the Taliban to be over to put Malala on the front cover to avoid any contreversal opinions.

Cover analysis media language
Analyse the cover for how media language has been used to create different meanings you could mention:
- main image
- anchorage
- cover lines
- layout
In the vogue cover that features Celebrity Malala (who miraculously survived a shot to the head by a Taliban soldier,) uses media language in so many ways to create different meanings. Firstly, the main image for the magazine shows the cover star Malala in a pose what seems to be very gentle and welcoming and wearing all red clothes, even clothes that symbolise her religion is red, the colour red is also present in this cover image in the background, the colour red is used in this way because it shows many connotations. The most important connotation shown is the colour red, thew colour red connotes sacrifice, passion and courage. These connotations can link to Malala because she sacrificed her life for girls in Pakistan to get an education from the Taliban. she sacrificed her life for what she believes in, this can also connote her passion and courage in what she believes in.
Secondly the use of media language is also present in the cover lines especially the main cover line, and the anchorage, the main cover lines ( the font for the cover lines are Serif) and cover lines are bright because it shows how important and relevant it is to Malala, For example, one cover line is 'fighting talk' this could connote that Malala is a fighter and will never give up, this links to when she was fighting for an education in Pakistan. The anchorage used in this magazine is when it says Survivor, Activist, Legend. this relates to her because this is how Vogue as a company view her life and legacy and what she has done for the world. this message is also reinforced with the masthead, another use of anchorage is her slight smile and eye level angle, and confidence shows her status is very high and the Anchorage elevates her status as survivor because it suggests that she has overcome being a victim and is a powerful Activist, and taking a political stance and her narrative makes her stand out as a legend.
Lastly the layout is unstereeotypical and follows the magazine and colour conventions. For example, the layout uses a Z shape for the way the cover lines and the magazine is shown to buyers. There is no cover lines near the main cover star, they are around her but not near her, this could connote her importance and the amount of power she has. This could connote that she is a legend which links to the main cover line. The layout used which is a Z shape, when you follow the Z shape across the magazine, you will eventually look into her eyes, this presents her as caring and welcoming.
DO NOW 31st January 2025
- how the media chooses to represent the world to us

- muslim

- courage, sacrifice, blood
REPRESENTATION
In the past, muslims have been represented in the media as bombers, terrorists, illegal and a threat to society, they are very rarely seen as anything else.
In terms of ethnicity, the vogue cover shows more inclusivity in who gets mentioned on the cover lines or who is relevant in the magazine.
Both gender and ethnicity are presented in the magazine as inclusive and stereotypical, the way they stereotype gender on the magazine cover as very stereotypical, for example, the cover lines show topics that can relate to the interests of women in the modern world. For example, one cover line is ' vogue's guide to summer beauty' this can be linked to a woman's interests like beauty and having the best beauty, this can easily be linked to women's stereotypes, The main cover star Malala looks very feminine by her flowing silky headdress, make-up and jewellery. she looks very classy and sophisticated.
On the other hand, gender is anti-stereotyped and features cover lines that do not appeal to female interests there is one cover line especially that stands out when making this point, it is 'Fighting talk, Jourdan Dunn meets Anthony Joshua' this cover line present on the main cover. It talks about model in Jourdan Dunn meeting professional boxer Anthony Joshua. this more links to males rather than females because UFC is more stereotyped to males. this gives out an inclusive idea and that this magazine can be read by anyone that relates to the magazine.
Ethnicity is presented to be inclusive in this magazine and magazine cover, For example, the main image shows the main cover star Malala wearing a Hijab which is apart of her religion, this is linked to ethnicity because in Pakistan, Hijabs are very common for women to wear. also Malala is the first Muslim main cover star in Vogue history, this shows that Vogue have started being more inclusive with their cover stars unlike the stereotype for muslims, Malala is shown as caring, gentle, harmless, whereas the stereotype for muslims are aggressive, have. bombs, terrorists and a threat to modern society. This Anti-stereotypical because the way she is presented goes against the stereotype of her religion and how they are presented in society.

similarities:
- gender
- Z shape layout
- camera shot type
- feminine look
- stereotypical female topics on cover line
Differences:
- clothing
- colour palette
- Malala cover challenges stereotypes
- Anti stereotypical cover lines on Malala cover
Overall between these covers, there are less similarities and more differences between both covers, these similarities and differences are mainly made up because of the representation of gender on the magazine cover. They are represented in different ways and in similar ways. there are multiple reasonings.
One similarity with the two covers is the way they are presented as feminine, in the Malala cover by Vogue, is presented as caring, gentle, silky, wearing make-up, and wearing jewellery. On the magazine cover of Kim Kardashian she is presented as sexy, approachable, attractive, and is wearing make-up, she is almost made to be a role model to younger women and to be like her, they are both represented as feminine but in different aspects of Feminism, Malala is shown as caring while Kim is shown as sexy and approachable, This is one of a few similarities in both of the covers.
Another similarity between both of the magazine poster is the cover lines used for the magazine cover, they are both stereotypical towards females and hobbies that are linked to them stereotypically, some examples on both magazines for these cover lines are: The best foundation in the world, love after lockdown, Vogue's guide to summer beauty, Pleated skirts, A Smart woman guide to self belief, these are most of the cover lines that link towards the stereotypical hobbies and what females are interested in.
One difference between both covers is the shot type, the shot types used on both covers are different, two different shot types.

EBI: You said there were more differences – talk about them first and include CONNOTATIONS.
TARGET 2: three paragraphs minimum, focusing on the area you identify as being more of.
DIRT: write a full paragraph explaining a clear difference.
DIRT WORK:
The differences between the magazine covers featuring Malala and Kim Kardashian have there many differences, the first main difference is the shot types used, the shot type used in the Malala cover is a medium close-up which shows her face and until the mid waist, this shot type goes against stereotypes of women because traditionally females on magazine covers are shown as sexy and are showing off a lot of skin, but this cover shows barely any visible skin and looks caring and gentle rather than using her for her body. Another difference is the cover lines, On the Kim Kardashian cover the cover lines are typically about Women's fashion and about make up and stereotypical genres that will apply to Women, The Malala cover goes against all stereotypes, an example of this is the cover line "fighting talk" this is stereotypically a Mens hobby ad links to them, the connotations of this is that Vogue are trying to go against all Women stereotypes and it worked successfully.
4th April 2025
ASSESMENT DIRT
QUESTION 1:
1C, language.
the language that is shown on the Malala has many different reasons and it creates many ideas about how Malala is as a human. some language techniques on the cover lines create these ideas. the cover lines that create these ideas are " Vogues guide to summer beauty" this cover line is very stereotypical because it is featured on the front cover of a women's magazine. another cover line that creates this idea is " the shape of now" this cover line is talking about the newest fashion at the time and what to recommend. this cover line is also stereotypical because fashion is linked to women and it features on a women's magazine front cover. On the other hand, one cover line that is not stereotypical and empowers women is " fighting talk" and the reference of Anthony Joshua. Boxing and fighting is usually stereotypical of masculinity and for males. Vogue has challenged this stereotype and has made Boxing relevant to women as well. The cover line " survivor, activist, legend" shows that after the crisis she was living in, she was not a victim, she was a survivor, a legend.
2a
Social context influence magazine covers by what has happening in the world at that point. they will want to link it towards something happening at the time this magazine came out. they want to keep their magazine up to date but also still target their audience with stereotypes to keep their audience entertained. an example of this on the Malala cover is the cover line " love after lockdown" this keeps the audience hooked to the magazine and to keep reading whilst still being up to date. using lockdown To keep the magazine relevant and thriving.
